TeliaSonera on a high after bringing mobile services to Everest

A quest to bring high-speed internet and 3G mobile telephony to Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, has been won by TeliaSonera.

The Scandinavian telecoms company and Ncell, its Nepalese subsidiary, on Thursday beat rival networks to bring mobile data services to the Everest base camp, 5,200 metres above sea level, and the surrounding area.

The technological breakthrough comes 57 years after the first successful ascent of the mountain by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.

The achievement puts TeliaSonera ahead of state-controlled Nepal Telecom, Indian-owned United Telecom and, on the other side of the mountain range, China Mobile.

Three years ago China Mobile erected a voice-only transmission station on Everest, which straddles Nepal and Tibet. The high-altitude station made it possible to make calls along the climbing route.

TeliaSonera had to overcome a harsh environment of freezing temperatures and no electricity supply.

The Everest mobile base station, which costs about four times as much as a mobile base station in less challenging terrain, is entirely powered by solar energy. It has to be maintained at an altitude where the thin air makes it a struggle for humans to breathe.

The mobile signal, however, does not reach the summit of the mountain.

Lars Nyberg, TeliaSonera chief executive, described Everest’s newfound connectivity as a “great milestone” for mobile telecommunications and for his “pioneering” company, which is listed in Stockholm and Helsinki.

The 3G services allow visitors to Everest and local people to browse the internet, send video clips and e-mails, and call friends and family across the world at a fraction of the cost of the traditional satellite phone.

“From its perch on the world’s tallest mountain, 3G high-speed internet will bring faster, more affordable telecommunication services to the people living in the Khumbu Valley, trekkers and climbers,” Mr Nyberg said from Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital.

“From the base camp, climbers can now call London and show their faces [on video]. Telecommunications have come a long way.”

Only about a third of Nepal is covered by a mobile telephone signal. Internet penetration is a mere 2 per cent.
