WikiLeaks founder remanded in London jail and denied bail

Julian Assange, the freedom of information campaigner who has embarrassed the US by leaking thousands of confidential diplomatic cables, was locked in a London cell on Tuesday night after being denied bail in connection with alleged sexual offences in Sweden.

Mr Assange, who founded the WikiLeaks website, was remanded in custody by a London court until December 14, after Sweden issued a warrant for his arrest over allegations of rape and sexual molestation.

WikiLeaks said Mr Assange’s detention would not prevent it from continuing to publish the cables, which have exposed the inner workings of US diplomacy. The whistle-blowing site’s leak has attracted condemnation from governments around the world but been praised by freedom of information campaigners.

Robert Gates, US defence secretary, told reporters in Afghanistan the arrest “sounds like good news to me”.

Mr Assange, 39, appeared by appointment at a police station on Tuesday. He denies the charges, which he claims are politically motivated.

Sweden’s prosecution service denied that the case was part of a conspiracy to target Mr Assange.

“The criminal investigation has nothing to do with WikiLeaks. It concerns him personally,” said Marianne Ny, a director of public prosecution. “I want to make it clear that I have not been put under any kind of pressure, political or otherwise . . . Swedish prosecutors are completely independent in their decision-making.”

The London court refused bail even though several prominent supporters of WikiLeaks offered to pay thousands of pounds in sureties, including Ken Loach, the film director, John Pilger, the investigative journalist and Jemima Khan, the writer and socialite.

Ms Khan said she had never met Mr Assange but was offering her support over “the principles of freedom of information and our right to be told the truth”.

Howard Riddle, chief magistrate, denied Mr Assange’s request for bail on the grounds that the alleged offences were serious, and that he was a flight risk because he had no strong connection to the UK and had access to funds.
